Fasting Food Items: What Should Be Consumed During Fasting

Fasting Food Items:  Fasting is a common practice in India. Along with Navratri, there are many other festivals and holy days like Shivratri, Janmashtami, etc. when people keep fast. On these special days people eat rock salt and people do not eat pulses, wheat, spices etc. During the fast, people prepare dishes using special ingredients, which we do not use on normal days. Know what are the things that you can eat during fasting.

1. Buckwheat Flour

Buckwheat is one of the cereals that is considered pure and is eaten during fasting days. Buckwheat is most commonly consumed during Navratri. Buckwheat flour has a hot taste, so it is mostly eaten with curd as curd has a cooling effect. Buckwheat flour is used in the preparation of many dishes, such as buckwheat flour pakoras, halwa, chilla.

2. Sago

Sabudana is an excellent source of carbohydrates which makes it a fast energy booster. Sabudana is one of the few things eaten during fasting days in India. Sabudana is gluten free and non allergenic so anyone can consume it. Sabudan is mostly made in the form of Khichdi.

3. Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits are a good source of fiber, minerals and vitamins on fasting days. Fruits like apple, pomegranate, banana, kiwi and all other fruits can be consumed. You can eat the fruit by making chaat. Vegetables that you can eat in fasting like, potato, gourd, arbi, sweet potato, tomato, carrot etc. Different vegetables are eaten in every family during the fast, so eat it after talking to the elders. Onion, garlic and brinjal are not consumed during the fast.

4. Singhara Flour

Water chestnut is rich in carbohydrates, starch, vitamin B6, riboflavin etc. You can also eat water chestnut flour and its fruit. In India they are eaten raw and also boiled. Water chestnut provides energy and is also an antioxidant. Water chestnut flour has a cooling effect and does not contain fat and cholesterol.

5. Makhana

Makhane is consumed in many ways during Navratri. Makhana is a source of many important nutrients and is considered a great ingredient for a healthy diet. It contains good amount of calcium, iron, phosphorous and magnesium which proves beneficial for health. Makhane is mostly eaten after roasting.
